As a major
participant in the Victorian Government’s Disaster Response and
Recovery Plan, VicRelief Foodbank can be called upon by the
Victorian government to respond with emergency aid and assistance
to those Victorian’s whose lives have be severely disrupted as a
result of bushfires, floods or drought. It is a task which
VicRelief Foodbank has admirably carried out since the
establishment of Victorian Relief in 1930.
Victorian
Bushfire Recovery Programme
VicRelief
Foodbank has partnered with some of Australia’s biggest companies
to roll out long-term aid support for local communities severely
damaged by the Black Saturday bushfires.More than 70 companies
committed to support the program. And four months later
offers of assistance continue to come in.
VicRelief
Foodbank knows from its long history and experience in disaster
recovery, dating back to the 1939 ‘Black Friday’ bushfire tragedy,
that the immediate support of the general public will soon
diminish. Yet, victims of the fire will need consistent support
for many months.
Through the
Victorian Bushfire Recovery Program VicRelief Foodbank will keep
pursuing donations of food, in particular staple products.
Emergency Relief agencies near the bushfire zones will get
continuing support to ensure that the assistance gets to those who
need it most.
Making
inroads on the drought: Rural Community Support
Program
Victoria is
currently experiencing its worst drought conditions in 100 years
with most rural areas experiencing widespread hardship as a result.
VicRelief Foodbank is a key facilitator of the Victorian
Government’s drought support program distributing food packages to
individuals and families in the most affected areas of Victoria. We
are also assisting local communities in building more effective
emergency relief networks to help cope with the huge impact of
the drought on their resources.
