1. How much food is wasted in Australia each year?
- It’s estimated that Australians are throwing out more than five
billion kilograms of food waste per year (i).
- 3 million kilograms of which is driven to landfill (ii).
- Food waste in landfill is the second largest producer of
methane gas, released as the food rots and decomposes. Methane gas
is 23 times more destructive than Co2 from cars (iii).
2. How many people go hungry in Australia each year?
- 2 million Australians rely on food relief at some point during
the year (iv).
3. What is food insecruity?
- Irregular access to safe, nutritionally adequate, culturally
acceptable food from non-emergency sources is known as food
insecurity.
4. How big is the food insecurity problem in
Victoria?
- We estimate 400,000 people living in Victoria are food
insecure.
5. How does Foodbank Victoria help?
- Through a 550 strong network of community organisations, in
2010 we redistributed 3.1 million kilograms of food and material
aid worth in excess of $30 million dollars.
